Volunteer
ORHS is honored to have some of the most dedicated volunteers around. Our volunteers are the heart of our organization and work tirelessly to help us in our efforts to protect pets in our community. We could not offer all the programs and services without our Volunteer Team! From washing dishes and helping with our mounds of laundry, to dog walking and cat cuddling, and providing comfort for an animal in need, the ORHS Volunteer and Foster Programs offer a wide variety of opportunities for animal lovers to use their unique talents and skills to help the animals. We would be struggling without our wonderful team of volunteers! Our volunteer opportunities work well with any schedule or time constraint.
Volunteer Opportunities:
The Oconee Regional Humane Society is volunteer based and we are always looking for help in all aspects of our organization. The following represents a few of our priorities. If you would like to help, please fill out the volunteer application below.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
When ORHS began in 1999 a handful of passionate volunteers worked hard to make a difference to the animals in our community, to put an end to the euthanasia of healthy and adoptable dogs and cats. When we opened our adoption center in 2012 we relied on volunteers to run our center and to care for the animals in our program. Today, our adoption center has grown and we’ve added more community outreach programs and we still rely on our amazing volunteers to help keep us operating. If you would like to help out we have lots of volunteer opportunities.
ORHS Volunteer Opportunities
Office Reception/Greeter
Volunteers greet visitors, answer phones and assist with filing, mailings, returning phone calls and other clerical projects.
Offsite Adoption Event Volunteer
Volunteers assist staff at various adoption events. Duties include assisting in set up, maintaining the safety and well-being of the dogs, answering questions about our animals, and exercising/entertaining our adoptable dogs.
Animal Photographer and Pet Profile Writer
An attractive photo of the pups or kitties allows shelter staff to effectively promote the animals on social media. This position allows volunteers to use their own cameras to take photographs of adoptable shelter animals and write appealing descriptions of the pets. Pet profiles include details that will appeal to potential adopters, such as the animal’s energy level, how interactive it is with humans, whether it appears to get along with other pets and if it responds to basic commands.
Puppy Care/Cleaning
Volunteers sign up for shifts to feed dogs, walk/exercise animals, clean puppy areas, help with laundry, socialize and love on puppies and dogs in our adoption center.
Kitty Care/Cleaning
Volunteers sign up for shifts to feed cats, clean cat areas, help with laundry and help socialize our kittens and cats.
Dog Walker
Volunteers provide dogs with much needed exercise by taking them on walks through the neighborhood surrounding the shelter. Along with basic dog-handling skills, a moderate degree of physical activity is necessary. Additional training will be provided. We encourage walkers to help our homeless dogs develop leash manners, as well as receive exercise and socialization.
Cat Socialization
This position involves socializing cats by petting, playing, and talking to them, which helps them build trust for people and other animals. It is a great opportunity for volunteers to provide human contact to cats and assist staff members with basic care. Duties also include cleaning litter boxes, refreshing food and water, and providing much needed TLC.
Dog Foster Parent
This position involves caring for a homeless dog in your home while he or she awaits adoption. Often they are simply too young or too old, need help recovering after surgery, or simply would benefit from the quiet and love of a foster home. There are certain requirements prior to being approved as a Foster Parent, including completing a Foster Parent Application and home visit.
Cat Foster Parent
Becoming a cat foster parent involves caring for one or more homeless cats or kittens in your home while they await adoption. The cats/kittens may be too young to be adopted, in need of recovery time from an illness or injury, abused or abandoned cats/kittens who need socialization, kittens who need to be bottle fed, or homeless mommy cats with litters of kittens. There are certain requirements prior to being approved as a Foster Parent, including completing a Foster Parent Application and a home visit.
Transport Volunteer
Volunteers use their own vehicles to transport animals to veterinary appointments, foster homes or offsite adoption events. This position involves socializing and comforting the animals, monitoring behavior during transport and ensuring paperwork is transported with animal.
Mobile Spay/Neuter Clinic Volunteer
Our Mobile Spay & Neuter Clinics need volunteers to assist Atlanta Humane’s staff in checking animals in at our quarterly events. This involves making animals are registered correctly and ready for their surgeries, checking paperwork and asking a few questions of their owners.
Volunteer Leader
This position involves closely working with the ORHS staff to develop and lead volunteer programs. Leadership volunteers are instrumental in recruiting, engaging and training volunteers and promoting volunteer opportunities.
Education
This position involves attending special events and educating the public about our mission and our programs. This may include manning booths at special events or attending and presenting at local functions. All material and information will be provided before an event. Working with schools, churches and summer camps helps reach the youth in our community.
Fundraising/Marketing/Public Relations
Fundraising volunteers work as a team to create, implement, staff, and manage our fundraisers throughout the year. Volunteers interested in marketing and PR help with publicity from printed media to radio and social media.
Community Pet Food Distribution
Volunteers bag and/or distribute donated pet food at local food pantry events.
